This organization exists because of a dream to help others. It has some of the best community citizens from our area, actively participating in keeping this vision alive and well. Since 1995 when the two Chapman sitsers decided they wanted to do something to help. $500,000.00 of funds have been raised and distributed to Seniors in need of an educational boost. New Smyrna this is something you can stand up for, you need to put a feather in your caps (excuse the pun) for coming together and coming thru. Many of our followers and subscribers have listened to my rhetoric for a while now, pounding home the message of coming together on common ground, because a house divided will surely fall. Well this is the model of that kind of philosophy and lifestyle, people organizing for a common cause putting forth their individual talents and positions to help one good cause. Notice how I have not mentioned any Senators name or local politician using his office or a tax or budget item all that can be attributed to this programs success is the people.

I can not close without mentioning the Achievement Awards this is a portion of the program, founded by Jim Humphrey that honors past graduates for their lifetime achievement in their chosen fields. I think what is most interesting about this is how from New Smyrna young people leave, they go to college, they rise in their chosen careers make ripples in the ocean of humankind that find their way back to New Smyrna. Honorees today include  Lead Flight Controller for Space Shuttle Michelle Ohlson (00′) CEO of Life Sciences International John Gilmore (46′), Dr. S.Jane Allen (59′), Archaeologist @ University of Hawaii, Famous Photographer for four decades international publications too many to name, Jack Mitchel(44″), and Former test pilot for NASA and Retired Naval Aviator from USS Midway Ronald F. Hanna (53′) These are great Americans but most importantly to us they are great New Smyrna Beach Alumni.

Just one week from the 45Th annual Indian River Open. We are visiting the home of that long standing PGA sanctioned event, New Smyrna Beach Golf Club or affectionately known as “The Muni” by locals. This Donald Ross design is everything you can ask for in a Public course. Mr. Ross, considered a legend in golf course layout design, built a championship jewel for this community in 1924. Over the years it has stood up as a challenging and often under estimated lay out. At first it appears so inviting,  with very little thick underbrush on the edges it appears wide. Yet as Mr. Ross is known for, you have certain areas and yardages that are a must hit. You must  achieve the right location for subsequent shots to hit, as it was said by the renovation architect, “The smallest greens I have ever worked with in all my years”. This course over its long history  has seen its Championship runs fo,r Florida State Championships and Junior Nationals and many a U.S. Open qualifying rounds posted here in the past decades. As with many Municipal run courses it had started to fade in the ever changing world of Golf. Great course’s evolve as did NSB Golf Club in the early parts of this century’s first decade, the city leaders and Golf Advisory board attacked the issue, and went forward with a renovation and new management .

 So after a renovation that complimented A Donald Ross design. In fact with the new equipment and balls in this modern age the renovation has given the old course a brand new set of teeth. Yet it still has every bit of feel of that famous Donald Ross layout, and penalty for hitting out of his optimum landing areas. With many new Fairway and Green side bunkers, this old course can send you right back to the great practice facilities shaking your head. Then in 2005 after all renovation was complete they needed  new Management, they got even more then they bargained for. Gary Wintz former touring professional and award winning golf course designer in his own right came available. City leadership & The Golf Advisory board did not hesitate.  Any observer would be quick to point out since Gary’s arrival things have been happening. From working this course on a maintenance schedule that really gives you that private club look, while playing at public club prices. Changes to the new fully stocked and modern looking Pro Shop. To a new Dinner club style restaurant, with a Chef straight from Naples, Italy.

All this translates into a real pleasure to come play and test your skills on a truly great Donald Ross Gem of a course. With a lot of man hours they have it in the best shape it has ever been in, and waiting for the young professionals to try their hand on Feb. 5-7  for The Indian River Open. Gary and his  staff have really got this gem shinny. You can now get, week in advance tee times, affordable memberships, and season memberships for our out of town long term visitors. Great Practice facilities, with chipping and sand practice areas. Along with a full shot driving range and two practice putting greens. Well it was Friday night and I wanted to do something that would help further my enlightenment of my community and how it is doing in these days. I could have gone to a Dinner club, I might have gone to a local sports Pub, I could have gone to the Daytona Beach Pier and stared at the Snowbirds. No none of these it was definitely a straight at the heart of a community, local High School Basketball game.  So off I went strolling down  memory lane.  I  would never  have thought about venturing down this road again, but life throws you curves and you learn to swerve.

For those who have not been to New Smyrna for a few years, they have closed the old High School, Then built and  opened a new High School in Edgewater, yeah I know New Smyrna’s High School is in Edgewater, it is a local thing.

Well I found my way there; not hard in a town of 26,500 year round residents. You know you only need so many streets for that density. Luckily they have not moved to many of the streets since I went to school thirty years ago. So I made it on time bought my $5.00 Special Adult ticket and walked in to a extremely nice modern Gymnasium. Decked from ceiling to floor in the familiar Black, White & Red of the New Smyrna Beach Cuda’s.

The head Coach Steve Garvilik a graduate of New Smyrna Beach High School 1979, and former Cuda Basketball player himself . lead his team to a stay withing striking distance Strategy of a Higher ranked Mantissas High (Flagler County) High School team. Close it was in fact as the video indicates @ the one minute or so mark Cuda’s had found them selves down, and in foul trouble. Along with Jackson there leading player on the bench with a shoulder injury,  for the better part of the second half  it was looking like they might not pull this one out. However with a couple of key time outs by Coach Garvilik and some unbelievable hustle defense play they had the ball and free throws, and only a minute remaining. So our Cuda forward goes to the line, after a hustle play got him the one and one penalty  free throws. Down by two he drains both and on the ensuing ball in bound play the opposing team pushes it down the floor only to have another Cuda player show even more hustle on a steal under their basket. Back to the free throw line to seal the deal. Congratulations to Coach and the Cuda players. But most importantly con-grads to you New Smyrna Beach residents that came out and supported these kids playing for their community. So go check out the Cuda schedule and make it a point to go see them this year and thank these young guys for trying to set an example for others to see. Dedication for team is far more rewarding then just for yourself.

Volusia County Golf Group Recap 

Okay as you can see we had a great time yesterday. The course was in pretty good shape. The rough is still long and thick so it calls for you to stay in the fairway. It was a great scoring condition as indicated by the scores we saw. In my group my own 79 was nothing compared to Joe’s 69. As well Matt Murray the reigning 2009 club champ, looked like two weeks in Colorado snow boarding must’ve helped his game. He looked in form, with a 68 respectfully. Everyone in our group added to the small amount of skins that was actually paid out. Our group had 10 birdies cumulatively. As well as another foursome had 11 between them. So that is why only a few birdies stood up for a little pay day.

Overall everyone as usual had many tails of the “almosts, and could haves “@ Beef O Brady’s there in New Smyrna Publix shopping center at the after round party. This is the usual after round party location, not because Venetian Bay does not have great facilities because they do. In fact I would say only  the LPGA in Daytona could even compare to their class. But tradition is tradition and O’Brady’s and Beer and Wings is a tradition that must be maintained!!

I hope everyone enjoyed the Volusia County Golf Group public invitation. You can not find a better way to hide from the Wife or the office on a Wednesday afternoon. Good Morning I will be introducing you to a group of folks located in Volusia County Florida. This is in the Central East Coast area of Florida which includes the cities, Daytona, Deland, Deltona, Ormond, Orange City and New Smyrna Beach to name a few. This is a group of fun loving people that love competition and a good time. The Whole show is run by the Queen from Maryland and aspiring Ladies Champion Penny Lester. She is the current New Smyrna Beach ladies Champ for 2009 and pushes her skill by competing with these guys every week to sharpen her skills.

  The groups are made up of all faucets of our local community from Leading Real Estate broker Dave Massey to Restaurant Owner, Mechanics and Artist. It is a complete spectrum. But they all come together for Golf.  This league is open to all who have a Handicap index from a club through the USGA system. By in varies but not normally more than $15.00 dollars. That pays out for Front nine then a back nine pay out, Skins, and closest to the pin pot on the par threes.

  They enjoy visitors who have a good time and join them after the round for a round @ Beef O’Bradys Located in New Smyrna Publix Shopping Center on State Road 44 . Come visit and get a round of friendly competition in and we bet you will become a regular. Normally Wednesday tee times start around 12 Noon.

  Each Month Penny hooks the group up with some round discounts for play at some of the outstanding courses all over Volusia County. If you are looking for networking in the Volusia community, making new friends and a little competition and a few lies afterwards over some Hot wings and Beer this is the group for you.

 I am proud to introduce you to Cathy & Vittorio Tiano the proud owners of Tiano’s Italian Restaurant, located @ New Smyrna Beach Golf Course 100 Wayne Ave.  This place has already established a reputation of fresh handmade authentic Italian cuisine in a very short period of time. Opened for business in the old Golf Course Snack bar in November 2009, but the Grand opening Jan 8^th, 2010 was evidence of a hard earned couple months of work. It was a huge success with live 1940’s & 50’s musical show it was standing room only. While serving over 200 hundred that evening it was still a fun feel at home atmosphere. I feel one of the first things you will notice here is that feeling like you just stepped in to an Italian family’s kitchen and spent the evening having dinner and feeling like part of the family. 

  The fare has some standard Italian dishes you would expect Stuffed Riggatoni, baked six layer lasagna, Eggplant Parmesan (personal favorite). But you will also learn why Vittorio puts his heritage background from Naples into his dishes when you try his Calamari. As Cathy explains Calamari in Naples is like Filet Minion to Americans, and the taste of his Calamari reflects that pride.

On our visit we were given the opportunity to visit with the evening patrons and could not find a negative response from a single customer. In fact we found large tables of 5-7 people all over the room and they were as relaxed and stuffed and satisfied as if they had just enjoyed the meal at home with friends.

  Now Cathy and Vittorio do not want you to forget that they have Pizza, I have saved this for last to relate this story. I spent a week in New York City a few years ago. My first visit actually, I know kind of late in life, but that is another story. Anyways… I went to Little Italy to have dinner one evening after a Broadway matinee. I got talked into the pizza against my real wants. My argument was I have pizza at home where I live Pizza is Pizza. I was blown away at the crust, the dough, flavor, and robustness of the entire “Meal” because the slices were HUGE. Well I learned the difference in real Pizza on that trip, and it has ruined me ever since. Until Tiano’ opened! New York has nothing on this original style Pizza they serve. It is made with distilled water and handmade dough no pre-frozen @ Tiano’s what a difference. I have to say that they have won me over for my Italian desires, and I think if you come in for a dinner you will stay as friends. Each morning we will compile the video shot for our Featured op ad, for the day and place in You Tube, Facebook, My Space,Google, and  right here on the daily blog entry. We will introduce you and your product or message. Provide links to your websites. Then use the day to go out on the streets and film us introducing you and your company to the people on the street. It will be funny, and we will meet your potential customers, and you can get direct feedback. The bottom line in advertising is what do I get for my money invested. Well compared to our cost your return is fantastic. You pick the day that coincides with the amount you want to spend on promoting that day. Then it goes out there in socail viril land and stays there for the whole year. pay for a day stay for the year.

Take today as a sample this blog entery goes to five different locations on the web. It will be seen over the next 24 hours by at least 5-8 thousand people in their homes or on their iphones or at work. The number of people who see our posts are going to be growing each and everyday. We have a concentration regionally in Florida but we extend to Canada, West Coast and Britian,  just to point out a few.

Then when these posts are shown as notifications on the walls of all these individual social pages. It is also seen by all of their friends. Google tells us the average social network account consists of 200 people. So if we go out to thousands it can actually be seen by 10′s of thousands. You get links to your site on the article and meta tags for the search engine to pick up for the rest of the year. This is a real ROI (return on investment). That is what we are about, doing positive honest networking. Not search engine formulas that we do not understand but just real life telling friends that we have a positive organization today to introduce to you. Then a great article/ review of what we know about your organization and what we think of the work you are doing. Plus some live testimonies of your cutomers. All in a fun social way that can give people a chance to laugh and pass on to their friends. Really you can not beat this.

These are tough times we want to do our part in raising America back up to the hieghts she deserves. We plan on doing that by bringing good positive people together.
